Tree and Forest

He came upon a tree in the forest. Funny that, he thought, that of all the trees in the forest he should at this very moment come upon this very tree. He felt nothing in particular though, and the moment was nothing special. Because if it had been, he might have thought something vaguely interesting, like "really". As it was, it wasn't, so he didn't, and that was the end of that.

This tree, for it was indeed a tree even though it was in a forest, was perfectly normal. It stood. Roots in the ground, branches spreading outwards - as is normal for normal trees.

For want of a better name, it was named Tree. Tree was not particularly proud of this name, but then Tree was very rarely anything at all except a tree. Tree ate from the earth and drank from the rain when it rained. When it didn't, it didn't drink at all. This could be for long spells at a time. Eventually though, it always rained again, and it could quench its thirst. So could the rest of the forest for that matter, but Tree was just Tree and not Forest.

Tree was old, or so it gathered itself. It could not remember the dawn of time, but then the seed that would become it had not been until a long time after that, but such matter-of-factly facts it could not know, so it merely contemplated the specific piece of information telling it that it could not remember the dawn of time. It is another fact, unknown to Tree, that it could indeed not remember yesterday. But then trees do not count days as man do, so pondering this the inescapable conclusion is that this was not at all very surprising.

Tree had seeded many a tree, none of whom it knew at all but had an inkling of the kind that only trees can have that they were were all growing well. It was only partially right, but what Tree didn't know didn't hurt it, so it was left happily ignorant of certain facts some might argue it would have been better off knowing, using them to make up a mind of his own.

Of course, trees do not have minds, so they are not made up of anything at all. And you need a mind to make another mind, so this was also impossible - hence there are no AI trees.

He looked at Tree, and it looked back. There was a silence that build to an intensity quite frequently experiences by Forest and Tree, but not by him. It frightened him. He felt observed. The slight wind that was abated, and there was a chilly calmness in the forest.

Suddenly a thunder rolled heavily in the sky, metal dark grey clouds not there a moment ago shivering under the pressure. Tree smiled, knowing rain was coming, and time was here to drink.

Lightning struck and Tree was no more.

Satisfied its part one accomplished, smiling wryly to itself, Lightning turned its attention to Man.
